Several Proton Therapy Facilities
Loma Linda University Medical Center made history with the first use of protons in hospital based medical therapy. On October 20, 1990, the first patient was treated with the proton accelerator. As the USA's first hospital-based proton treatment center for cancer, Loma Linda University Medical Center offers proton therapy for prostate, lung and brain cancers. They treat more patients worldwide than any other center of its kind, having delivered hundreds of thousands treatments in a caring and compassionate way.

In August 2006, a new cancer treatment became available for the first time in the Southeast US. Proton therapy provides cancer patients excellent results with fewer treatment side effects. The state-of-the-art radiation oncology center was made possible through support from many partners including Shands Hospital, the University of Florida, and the State of Florida. UFPTI will serve as a center for multidisciplinary research involving all interests that touch cancer and its treatment.

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital has an exceptionally comprehensive radiation treatment program. The Proton Therapy Center at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center offers the most advanced form of radiation treatment available in the Southwest. The center is a 94,000 square foot facility including three treatment rooms with gantries that administer proton beams from 360-degree angles, a fixed-beam treatment room, 16 exam rooms and a simulation suite with positron emission tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging for accurate treatment planning.
